Your hobby can be your future

When you love what you do, it won’t feel like work at all

Society sometimes teaches us to go after the jobs where you can earn the most money as the path to achieve your goals. But there are other ways to plan a career.

Think about what you love to do the most in the world, and do the research in your community to see if you can make money out of it. This could be your pathway to finding the right job for you.

When Tanzanian author, Halima was a young girl, people thought that she should become a doctor. She even went to college to study pharmacy. But her heart had other plans. Halima had loved books from a young age. So she switched from the sciences to creative writing and now her job is an author. This was a hard decision but she knew she would be happier making a career in something she loved.

So do you have something you really love or enjoy doing that can be your career or make money out of it? Maybe you love cooking, love sports or you are artistic? Do your friends and family ask you to help them with school work because you’re so good at it?

Then you might have found your future career! Doing something that you’re really passionate about will make you feel like you’re not working at all.

Are you wondering how to start this journey? Here are some tips that might help you:

Do a little research: Talk to people who have the kind of jobs, business, or career you’re interested in to help you choose the path that’s right for you. For instance, some jobs, careers, or businesses require a specific educational qualification. For others, this isn’t needed and you can use your talent or skill to earn money, like being a DJ, MC, a cook. Try to find out as much as you can about the careers you are interested in so you can start to plan your first steps.

You can start today: Sometimes we don't need a lot of supplies or money to get started on your career path. Can you start by offering services from your home, or in your community? Can you work with someone who is already doing the job you love, and get some skills by working with them? Remember, taking a few small steps will help you understand the job and whether you want to do it in the long term.

Take your time! Take time to find out what your passion is, and don’t worry if you’re still unsure. Use this time to explore your options and try different ideas - you can always change your mind, just like Halima did.
